Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) patients usually undergo a clinical ENT evaluation before any therapeutic decision is made. This clinical examination would predict the occurrence of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, be cost-effective, reproducible, and identify sites of obstruction in the upper airway. To achieve this goal, ENT specialists from Belgium, representatives of the country's academic hospitals, tried to implement an updated treatment of the clinical evaluation of patients with SDB. History, assessment of risk factors, excessive daytime sleepiness, static and dynamic evaluation of the upper airway (velopharyngeal aspect, tonsil grading, Mallampati score, Müller maneuver, fiberoptic evaluation) were standardized in a consensus report easily accessible to the vast majority of ENT specialists. This consensus should be understood as a clinical workup to be performed prior to monitoring breathing during sleep.
